Gwen Farrell Adair, the actress and trailblazing sports figure best known for her appearances in the classic TV series M*A*S*H and the film Billy Jack — and, more importantly, for becoming the first licensed woman boxing referee in history — has passed away at the age of 94.
Keith Farrell, her son, confirmed that Gwen passed away in Sherman Oaks, California, of natural causes.
While her acting credits earned her recognition, Gwen’s most enduring legacy began in 1980, when she stepped into the boxing world as a referee — a move that was virtually unheard of at the time. According to her family, she earned the deep respect of fighters, trainers, and fans alike as she broke barriers in a field dominated entirely by men.

A GoFundMe has been established to assist the family with funeral and memorial expenses. The post reads in part: “Her passing leaves a deep void in our hearts, one that cannot be filled. We will miss her voice, her strength, and the quiet comfort she brought into our lives. While we are heartbroken, we are also incredibly grateful for the life she lived and the legacy she leaves behind.”
Gwen Farrell Adair was 94 years old. She is remembered as a pioneer, a performer, and a beloved presence to all who knew her.
Rest in peace.
