During a Tuesday episode of The Drew Barrymore Show, Theron opened up about her romantic life and how being a single mom has made her genuinely appreciate having her own space.
“My kids are at an age now where they actually enjoy that I’m dating because they want to be involved,” Theron shared with host Drew Barrymore. “It’s really funny how I was scared they’d be threatened by it, and now they’re like, ‘Mom, is he texting you? Like, go on the date, mom.'”
The actress mentioned that she regularly has open conversations with her two daughters — both of whom she welcomed through adoption in 2012 and 2015 — about her dating life and romantic experiences.
However, when the conversation shifted toward the idea of taking things further in a relationship, Theron admitted she genuinely struggles to picture herself ever sharing a home with a partner again.
“I really mean this — people think I joke — I don’t think I could ever live with somebody again,” she said.
“I would love for you to be close, like buy the house down the street. But I don’t know if I can, maybe it’s because I still have my daughters in the house, and maybe that will change when I’m an empty nester, but I’m looking for something very specific,” she added.
At the end of the day, family remains her top priority. “Your kids come first, they always come first,” Theron said.
Theron has long been candid about embracing life as a single mother on her own terms.
Back in July, she described choosing single motherhood as “one of the healthiest decisions” she ever made, pushing back against the stigma that often surrounds it.
“With women, it’s always like, something must be wrong with her. She can’t keep a man. And it’s never part of the discussion of like, ‘Wow, she’s really living her truth. She’s living in her happiness. This is actually a choice that she made,'” she pointed out.
Theron isn’t alone in this thinking among Hollywood’s elite. Back in 2016, Whoopi Goldberg — who has walked down the aisle three times — told The New York Times that dating simply doesn’t appeal to her anymore at this point in her life.
“I’m much happier on my own. I can spend as much time with somebody as I want to spend, but I’m not looking to be with somebody forever or live with someone. I don’t want somebody in my house,” Goldberg explained.
Similarly, during a February appearance on the Today show, Keke Palmer made it clear that living with a romantic partner isn’t something she’s interested in either. “I like my alone time,” she said simply.
