She Built an Empire to Escape Her Trauma — The Untold Story of Paris Hilton

From being one of the defining sensations of the early 2000s, and among the first celebrities famous simply for being famous, to working alongside lawmakers to advocate for protections for children in reform schools and beyond, Paris Hilton’s story is far more complex than it appears. Suffice it to say, we may not know her as well as we think we do.

Hilton rebelled against her parents as a young teen, admitting that she used to sneak out at night and go to clubs with a fake ID.

Reform schools

Her parents became desperate to stop her and began sending her to boarding schools that specialized in helping teens with behavioral issues. They were called “emotional growth schools.”

Reform schools

She previously detailed the traumatic experiences she endured at these institutions in her 2020 documentary ‘This Is Paris,’ describing them as closer to labor camps or prisons than schools. She recalled repeatedly attempting to escape, only to face physical punishment or solitary confinement as a consequence.

Provo Canyon School

Paris Hilton studied at Provo Canyon School in Utah until she turned 18. This school has since been the subject of a significant scandal revealing the abuse that took place there.

Revelations of abuse

Hilton and several other survivors who feature in the documentary outline the alleged emotional, physical, and sexual abuse that minors suffered at Provo Canyon.

Revelations of abuse

They all had stories to tell about the long-lasting impact the trauma has had on their lives. Hilton speaks about her insomnia, horrific nightmares, and an inability to trust people, particularly in romantic relationships.

The tape

However, Provo Canyon School wasn’t the only reason she had trust issues. Shortly after leaving the school, she started a relationship with professional poker player Rick Salomon. He was 13 years her senior.

The tape

Salomon released a notorious tape of the two of them that would significantly damage Hilton’s reputation. The tape became the subject of a divisive public debate and a decade’s worth of criticism at her expense.

When discussing the leaked tape, she makes the valid point that “if that happened today it would not be the same story at all.” Today, Salomon would have been the bad guy and Hilton the victim.

Pressure and manipulation

At the time, there was speculation that Hilton was involved in the release of the tape and that it was a sort of publicity stunt. She claimed this wasn’t the case and that she was absolutely devastated. She was only 18 when the tape was made and says she was pressured into making it.

Assuming the character

This is the point where the Paris Hilton everyone loved to hate came into existence. She went all out on the ditzy, vacuous, rich girl persona. She was adored by tabloids and hounded by paparazzi.

Paparazzi madness

Media expert Sheeraz Hasan claims that at the height of her fame, a good photo of Hilton could sell for anything from US$50,000 to $1 million. ‘This Is Paris’ includes footage of paparazzi getting into physical altercations over her.

The queen of reality stardom Kim Kardashian was actually Paris Hilton’s personal assistant for a while, and became a sort of protégée.

Kardashian is interviewed in the documentary and credits Hilton with creating a new role in the public eye which facilitated her own career. She claims that Hilton started the trend of having paparazzi follow your every move.

‘The Simple Life’

Her fame was taken to new levels when her reality TV show ‘The Simple Life’ aired. The show followed Hilton and her best friend and fellow socialite Nicole Richie as they joined a middle class family and attempted to adapt to a ‘normal’ life.

One of her most famous moments in the show was when she claimed not to be familiar with the enormous supermarket chain Walmart, and asked if they sold walls.

Behind the scenes, she always seemed to be extremely driven and completely dedicated to her work. During an interview with The Mirror in 2019, she claimed that she traveled 250 days out of the year to promote her brand and grow her business.

Her extremely tight schedule allowed her very little free time. At that point in her life, her sister seemed concerned for her and said she had been telling Paris to take a vacation for years.

Need for security

In a conversation with her sister Nicky, Paris admitted that she wanted to have a family but couldn’t see when she’d have the time. She added that she didn’t feel able to relax until she’d made a billion dollars.

Building a family

However, that later changed. Hilton tied the knot with entrepreneur Carter Reum in November 2021 in a ceremony in Los Angeles. The couple welcomed their first child, son Phoenix, via surrogate in January 2023, and less than a year later expanded their family again with the arrival of daughter London in November 2023.

In the documentary film ‘This Is Paris,’ released in 2020, Hilton spoke about her experiences as a survivor of the troubled teen industry. The documentary suggested her famed persona is a false one, partly created by tabloids and partly created by Hilton herself as a form of self-protection.

Struggles as a teen

One powerful quote from the documentary relates to the difficulties she suffered at the reform schools her parents sent her to as a teenager. “I was going to do everything in my power to be so successful that my parents could never control me again.”

Abusive relationships

In ‘This is Paris,’ Hilton shares a difficult relationship history in which several of her boyfriends had been physically abusive to her. “I just wanted love so badly that I was willing to accept mistreatment and abuse in its many forms.”

The real Paris

At that point in time, Hilton seemed like a lonely person, throwing herself into her work and shielding herself from the world with a carefully crafted character.

Advocacy

Later, in January 2026, she partnered with Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to advocate for the Defiance Act, legislation designed to protect victims of non-consensual deepfake pornography. The bill would create a civil cause of action for individuals whose images are used in deepfake AI content without their consent.

‘Infinite Icon: A Visual Memoir’

Paris Hilton revealed a new side of herself in her documentary ‘Infinite Icon: A Visual Memoir.’ Having premiered on January 30, 2026, the film follows Hilton as she records her 2024 electro-pop album and prepares for a major performance at the Hollywood Palladium, while also highlighting her activism and personal growth beyond her early fame.
